EV charger installation in Orange County

You bought the car. Now you want the charger installed right, on a circuit that can actually carry it.

What it usually involves

The two paths are a hardwired Level 2 charger, wired directly into the wall with no plug in between, or a 50-amp outlet that a portable unit plugs into. Brian installs both, and will tell you which fits your situation instead of defaulting to whichever is easier for him to sell.

He works on the Tesla Wall Connector and every other brand on the market. The charger itself matters less than the circuit behind it: the wire gauge, the breaker size, and whether the panel has room for the load. Get those wrong and the charger nags you with fault codes or, worse, runs hot.

Before anything goes in, Brian runs a load calculation on your panel. That tells him, with numbers instead of a guess, whether your existing service can take a 40 or 48-amp charging circuit alongside everything else the house already runs, or whether a sub-panel makes more sense than forcing it onto a full panel.

A lot of these jobs are a straight run from the panel to the garage wall. Some are longer: a detached garage, a charger mounted outside near the driveway, or conduit that has to go through a finished space instead of an open stud bay. Brian routes it so the conduit reads as intentional, not like an afterthought bolted to the siding.

In a finished garage, keeping the run clean matters as much as the electrical work itself. That means conduit that lines up with the framing, a charger mounted at a height that actually works with your car's port, and no exposed staples or drooping cable. It is the same "clean finish" standard as every other job, just for a charger instead of a light fixture.

Permits and inspection

EV charger circuits need a permit and inspection in Orange County cities, and Edison's rebate programs require the permit number. Brian pulls it, meets the inspector, and knows the GFCI and disconnect questions before they are asked.

Questions people ask about EV chargers

Hardwired or an outlet?

Hardwired is the better fit for a charger running at 48 amps, since it is a fixed, dedicated connection with nothing to loosen over time. An outlet gives you flexibility to swap chargers or unplug the circuit for something else later. Brian will walk you through which one matches your charger and your plans.

Will my panel handle it?

A load calculation answers that directly instead of guessing. Most panels have enough headroom for a charging circuit once Brian runs the numbers; when they do not, a sub-panel is usually a cleaner fix than a full service upgrade.

How long does it take?

Most straightforward installs are a half day, from the panel to a mounted, working charger. A longer conduit run, a detached garage, or a sub-panel adds time, and Brian will tell you which situation you are in before he starts.

What does it cost?

Every house is different, so Brian does not publish prices. Text a photo of what you have and he will give you a real number before he shows up.

Do you handle the Edison rebate paperwork?

Yes. Brian pulls the permit and gives you the permit number and the documentation Southern California Edison asks for, and walks you through the submission.
